Immigrant and Minority-owned Small Businesses & Economic Recovery

Nancy Carin, Executive Director of community-based non-profit organizations the Business Outreach Center (BOC) Network and BOC Capital, shares similar stories about the clients in New York City that her organizations work with everyday. Many are local small businesses, ranging from home-based childcare providers, taxi drivers, and construction businesses to salons, barbershops, and neighborhood store owners, who simply aren’t hearing about the financing programs or face other barriers. “There is confusion and uncertainty, compounded by isolation, which has prevented many small businesses from applying for resources that they are potentially eligible for,” she said. “A lot of businesses are left out of these information loops.”

Community organizations like the BOC Network are working tirelessly to support their local communities and connect them to resources. However, while they play an important role in supporting small businesses, local government officials hold significant power and reach to ensure that all businesses have the information and access to get the help they need.
